Kobe Bean Bryant has fans of ALL creeds worldwide. Think about the fact that he ranked #1 on the NBA’s list of jersey sales this year (based on sales outside the US from the 2011-12 season) and that this Rookie Kobe Bryant game used jersey just sold for $115,242 which is the record (far and away) for any modern era game-used piece of sports memorabilia from any sport.
The man’s fan hood knows no boundaries, as he won the “trend-setter” award in this years first annual Social Media Awards meaning he had the most mentions on Twitter this year. He also received the “Thumbs-Up” award (Facebook Post received most “likes”).
This year, Kobe made the All-NBA first team for his 7th consecutive season and for the 10th time in his career. This ties him for 2nd in history with some decent names you may recognize; Jabbar, Baylor, Cousy, Pettit, West, & Jordan. Second to the Karl Malone.
Just to note a couple of his accolades; 5x NBA Champion, 2X NBA Finals MVP, 2008 NBA MVP, 14x NBA All-Star, 10x All-NBA First Team, 4x NBA All-Star Game MVP, and 1996 Naismith Prep Player of the Year. Not to mention, he scored 81 points in a game as a guard in the modern era.
Notes on the jersey itself are; Kobe wore this jersey during the pre-season of 1996. He then sat out the Lakers home opener and made his debut on November 3, 1996 wearing this jersey. On the left front tail is the “Champion” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “44”. Adjacent is a second “Champion” tag with “Designed & Tailored Exclusively for Los Angeles Lakers 96-97 Body Length + 4”. Across the front is “LAKERS”. Player number “8” appears on both the front and back. Player name “BRYANT” appears on back. All numbers and letters are done in purple on white tackle twill. On the left breast is the official NBA embroidered logo done in gold. On the inner waistband of the matching shorts is the “Champion” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and size ”38”. Adjacent is a second “Champion” tag with “Designed & Tailored Exclusively for Los Angeles Lakers” and player number “8” written in black marker. In the lower inseam are four flag tags, “100% Nylon”, “3 Inch Extra Inseam”, “2 Inch Extra Rise” and “1996-1997”. On the lower right leg is the official NBA embroidered logo done in gold.
I guess the question at hand is; who will finish with a more complete career…..Kobe, or Durant? Ok ok maybe Lebron.
