Auction Action by Paul Lucas of ESPN & Uni Watch

Our friends at Grey Flannel Auctions have another big auction underway. Here are some of the more interesting items:

Screen-shot-2013-08-27-at-11.14.16-AM• Oh baby, it just doesn’t get any better than this spectacular Minnesota Pipers warm-up top. Magnificent!

• I really like this all-star jersey. Vertical arching on top, negative arching on the bottom, and a nice scattering of stars — what’s not to like? (Here’s the full auction listing.)

• Love this old Ohio State warm-up top, especially the spectacular buckeye sleeve patch!

• Speaking of warm-up tops, dig this Indiana State design, signed by Larry Bird (full listing).

• More warm-ups: Who would design with a bagpiper on the front? That’s from the ABL’s old Cleveland Pipers (full listing).

• The Harlem Magicians were a Globetrotters-esque team founded by Marques Haynes. Check out their uniforms! And dig the uni number, too.

• I’ve written before about the All-American Redheads, a women’s barnstorming team. Here’s one of their gorgeous uniforms.

• I love how the ABA’s Utah Stars used a star-shaped motif for the NOBs on their shooting shirts.

• How great would it be if the Knicks went back to this warm-up design? A little surprising there are no stripes on the sleeve cuffs, though.

• We’re used to seeing Pete Maravich wearing a nickNOB. But at one point — okay, it was for a promotional campaign, but still — he went FNOB.

• Never seen such a big shawl collar like the one on this St. Louis Hawks warm-up. Be sure to click the thumbnail for the front view — bizarre, no?

• If you click-through the thumbnails on this Cincinnati Royals jersey, you’ll see that the memorial shoulder band (which was for team owner Thomas Wood) came to a point. I’m not sure why I like that so much, but I do indeed like it!

This year’s Induction Auction on Sept. 7 – Grey Flannel Auctions’ eighth such event to date – includes 143 lots, each accompanied by a letter of authenticity from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

MintCondition_LucasEmail_3

Lots 1–17 come from Lucas, one of the most honored and accomplished basketball players in the history of the game. Lucas is one of only three players in history to win championships at every level (high school, college, NBA, Olympics).

The superstar of the auction is his 1960 USA Olympic Basketball Gold Medal which comes with a $250,000 minimum bid as well as his 1960 USA Olympic Basketball game-used jersey ($50,000), his 1973 New York Knicks NBA Championship ring,  Ohio State Championship ring and 1979 Hall of Fame Inductee ring.

Game-worn jerseys from fellow Hall of Famers Oscar Robertson and Wilt Chamberlain are also two of the lots featured in this year’s auction. Robertson’s Cincinnati Royals road jersey comes from one of his mind-boggling triple-double seasons.  Chamberlain’s jersey comes from his days as a member of the San Francisco Warriors.

“Pistol” Pete Maravich averaged almost 45 points per game during his years at LSU (before the three-point line existed) and is the youngest player ever inducted into the Naismith MemorialBasketball Hall of Fame.  Maravich items in the sale, consigned by the family of the late legend include his 1976-77 NBA Scoring Champion Award, his 1977 signed contract with the New Orleans Jazz and a game-used New Orleans Jazz jersey that reads “Pistol” on the back.

NBA legend Bernard King will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2013. Lots 18–26 presented in this catalog originated from his personal collection and will come with a hand-signed letter from Hall of Famer Bernard King. The lots include King’s 1985 NBA Eastern Conference All-Star game-used and autographed jersey and his 1983-84 Players Association MVP trophy.

Other inductee treasures include Guy V. Lewis’ 1945-46 University of Houston worn warm-up jacket, and two Jerry Tarkanian game-used and autographed towels from his final game at UNLV on March 3, 1992.

Bidders will be transported back in time with some never-before-seen styles from the ABA. Teams like the New Orleans Bucs, Minnesota Pipers, Carolina Cougars, Houston Mavericks and many more come to life in the form of game-used warm-up jackets and shooting shirts.

Also being offered is a rare and unique opportunity to rub elbows with either of these two college basketball coaches who are still enhancing their Hall of Fame resumés. The VIP auction package includes the following benefits: Two game tickets to a Syracuse Orange or North Carolina Tar Heel home game during the 2013-14 basketball season, priority seating at the game behind the bench, attendance at the press conference following the game, and attendance at a team practice which will take place the day before the game.

There is also a unique and rare opportunity to be a part of the 2014 NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans. The VIP package contains: Two  tickets to the NBA All-Star Game press conference prior to the game itself, where the nominees for the 2014 Hall of Fame Class are officially announced; two tickets to a private brunch with HoFers held prior to the official announcement, two  priority seats to the NBA Slam Dunk Contest held at New Orleans Arena on February 15, 2014; two priority seats to the 63rd edition of the NBA All-Star Game held on February 16, 2014 at New Orleans Arena in Louisiana, and two tickets to a VIP reception held either before or after the All-Star Game. Winning bidders will be up close and personal with the greats of the game in a way like no other as a VIP for the 2014 NBA All-Star Game.
